MAP alliance partner helps the City Colleges of Chicago avoid over $2.2 Million in energy consumption and annual savings of $300,000 in utility costs. The City Colleges of Chicago consist of a number of independent learning institutions including the campuses of Malcolm-X, Harry S. Truman I & II, R. J. Daley, Olive-Harvey, Kennedy-King, Lakeside Learning Center and the Administrative Center. Their primary charter, to provide quality education to students from the Chicago area, was being challenged as resources were not available to meet essential educational needs. The administration was under significant pressure to keep costs down. MAP’s engineering partner, J.T. Katrakis & Associates, Inc, (JKA), working with the Center for Neighborhood Technology, was selected to provide a comprehensive multi-year energy management plan and program for the City Colleges of Chicago. As part of the energy management strategy, Katrakis conducted energy studies, implemented low-cost and no-cost measures, prepared design specifications and provided construction management. They also assisted with monitoring & verification procedures and staff training. In addition, Katrakis obtained over $850,000 in grant awards for the City Colleges of Chicago from the Federal Institutional Conservation Programs (ICP). As Project Manager, Katrakis helped the City Colleges of Chicago implement capital improvements such as lighting retrofits, Energy Management Systems and variable speed drives. As a result, Cumulative Avoided Energy Costs and billing corrections during the six years of service totaled over $2.2 Million with annual avoided utility costs of $300,000 per year. This at a payback of less than six months. Additional operation & maintenance and capital improvements have been analyzed and are expected to yield over $1 million in additional energy savings at about a four year simple payback.
