October, 2005 - How Palatine Township will save $20,000 over two years By Michael Puente The Palatine Township board on Monday accepted the recommendations of a utility financing audit report that will save the township about $20,000 over the next two years. Momentum Advantage Partners LLC of McHenry conducted the audit on behalf of AM AUDIT of Crystal Lake. Ed Haag, a partner of Momentum, said its audit concluded the township can save money in its natural gas and electricity usage, waste hauling and telecommunication equipment. By seeking the best natural gas rates through tariffs and other price-reducing mechanisms, the township can expect to save more than $11,100 over the next two years, Haag said. It’s Haag’s company’s job to find the best pricing plans through ComEd for the township. Haag said the saving in natural gas costs are not from a fixed-price program, which his company does not recommended adopting despite warnings that the price for natural gas is expected to increase dramatically this winter. Haag said the price of natural gas will depend on the demand based on how cold it will be in the coming months. Under a fixed-priced plan, the price is based at the peak rate. “That rate may go down,” Haag told the board. The township can also save about $9,700 over the next two years by switching to a different waste hauling service, while some minor savings will come through the replacement of telecommunications hardware. However, the entire $20,000 savings would not all go into the township’s coffers. While the audit did not cost the township a penny, under its agreement with Momentum, it will split the cost savings with the firm over the next two years. Meaning, Momentum will receive $10,000 over the next two years for finding cost savings for the township. After the two-year period, the township will reap all the savings, if there are any. Township Supervisor Linda Fleming supported passage of the audit recommendations. “I think it’s a very good deal,” Fleming said. “I think this is an excellent proposal. It’s not costing the township anything.” Haag said his firm is also conducting a similar utility audit for Palatine Township Elementary District 15 and the Palatine Park District.
